Looking For Advice on Engine Warranty
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:39:08 AM »
We have an '09 Monterey Sunset which is equipped with a 425 hp C-9 Cat engine. I know before we bought the coach, that the turbos had been replaced at 3 times by the original owner, and I suspect he had just become fed up enough to get rid of it. Since we have bought it, I have had the alternator go, which is not covered under the existing 5 year engine warranty, but cost us $2,600 up here in Canada. We will soon be heading into the final year of the factory warranty on the engine, and I am not a big fan of buying extended warranty, but in this case I may make an exception. From the research I have done, it appears that there are several options for extended warranty, and price seems to be dependent on what level of coverage you get. At this point the coach only has 20,000 miles on it, so I am a bit nervous about it. I put 7,000 miles on it since I have bought it, and the engine has run fine with the noted exception. I have read many issues that seem to be chronic with these engines, and am really unsure how to proceed.  I know if I lose confidence in the coach, I'll trade it myself, but it is a nice coach, and I have put a lot of money it so far getting it exactly the way we wanted it.  Does anyone have any experience in the extended warranty and advice on this?
Thanks.

Tom,

If the engine is the biggest concern I think I would try to buy the warranty from CAT.  I am not positive, but I think they still offer it.

Tom,

Give Jeff a call at WholeSale Warranties. He is the owner and they have a warranry program that says everything is covered *except* what they show that *isn't* covered. Gives you a good preview of what is covered.

His number: (800) 939-2806.

Thanks folks. I will call and see what the price at wholesale warranties is. I was looking at the extended Cat warranty from the dealer and wondered if anyone had bought that warranty and what if any issues they had with the Cat warranty itself?

Tom,

The cat warranty in my opinion would be the best if that was your only concern.

Thanks, I figure that the other issues such as appliances, etc can go on any coach so my real concern is the engine in this coach given its sketchy history and the issues other owners have had. I will follow up with a cat dealer about extending the factory warranty. Thanks for the input.
