C-12 oil pressure
« on: April 03, 2015, 10:00:32 PM »
I have a 2004 Marquis with a C-12 Cat and was wondering what others with this motor have experienced as far as oil pressure. I get about 32 pounds of pressure @ 1700 rpm and 15 pounds @ idle. Seemed a little low to me.

Rick,

Has your oil pressure always been in this range or did it just start? I would check your pressure with a manual gauge to see if the sensor and dash gauge are accurate.

I bought this coach with 40k on it and have put 5k on it. Oil pressure has always been the same.

Mine runs about the same.  The first time I started it the low oil pressure at start kind of worried me.

    Hi Rick and Jerry,
My 2000 Marquis C-12 has 38psi @1500 rpm and 20 at an idle. When I bought it the mileage was 53000 and now 62000. Still the same after all that fun. Did the internet research and read all the horror stories and I don't believe we have anything going on. What a fun coach to drive especially passing all those 18 wheelers on a 7 percent grade. Rick,

Is this reading your dash gauge, Aladdin reads off the engine control. Have your pressure checked with a manual gauge, that way you know what you have. Your sensor or dash gauge can be off more that this.

The information I shared with you guys was from my Aladdin. The dash gauges on the coaches are for reference only. The Aladdin is a reflection of what the engine ECM is seeing. If your not comfortable with what your seeing, put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the engine and compare or go to Cat for their elavuation.

Because there are so many 505hp C-12's out there I was hoping to get more feedback about what others are showing for oil pressure at idle and 1500-1700. I am very interested in knowing what other C-12 owners experience.

Rick,
My C12 runs about 20 PSI at idle and about 40 PSI at cruising speed (1400 RPM) when hot (180 degrees) to the best of my memory. I can tell you exactly what it is next month when I start traveling again for the summer. Are you reading the oil pressure from your Aladdin or your dash gauge?

I am reading my oil pressure from my Aladdin. My dash gauge reads a bit higher.

Call Cat and they will tell you to first put a mechanical gauge on it to verify what pressure the motor puts out and go from there.

Hi, have info off Cat SIS for the C-12 oil pressure. Did not state engine hp so I used 445 hp. The correct oil pressure for this engine is high side 47.7 psi and the low side is 13.6 psi. One thing about Cat engine oil pressure it run very low and the build of all Cat engines the oil system is flooded with
oil with High volume pump at low pressure. Most Cat oil gauges do not have numbers because of
the low pressure.  Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic ( info again is pulled off Cat Sis )

Rick,
I had to make a short road trip this morning so I double checked my oil pressure readings and mine are similar to Geralds.  All reading were taken off the Aladdin system.  My cold engine idle is 40 psi @ 700 rpm, after getting everything up to normal operating temperatures (185 degrees) my idle was 22 psi @ 700 rpm and 41psi @ 1700 rpm.
