Passenger side heat ac blower motor
« on: June 03, 2018, 08:17:58 AM »
On our 1999 Marquis the ac heat fan motors made noise and stopped working.  Found driver's side blower motor not working and replaced it thanks to a previous post.  I then
found the passenger side blower motor is not working.  I disconnected the orange and black wires and jumped from a 12v battery, the fan works well.  I checked the passenger side fan switch and it does not have power when the ignition is on and the main AC control is on with the Passenger switch on and lit.  If I turn the passenger side fan switch off I get 10 volts to the terminals on the back of the switch.  It appears the black wire is power in.
In a previous post I read about a resistor for the blower motors mounted on the driver's side under the front cap.  Are they rectangular with many slots for venting?  If I am looking at them they have one connector with 3 wires and one single connector with a red wire.  I noticed the single red wire connector on the driver's right side looks burnt.  How would you use jumper wires to bypass the resistor to see if this is the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark, The resisters you are looking at are the "low, medium, and medium high" speeds for each of the blowers. The high speed is "full voltage" from the circuit breaker in the side compartment drivers side. Replace any terminals that are burned or melted and check operation. You can get replacement blower motors at any parts house for 35.00. Keep in mind one blower runs clock-wise and the other runs counter-clockwise.
 hope this helps, Fred

Thanks Fred,
I re-checked my previous post information on the Resistor and find it has one connector with 4 wires (not 3 as I stated previously) this connector has a red, yellow, white and gold colored wires and the single connector is a orange wire.  Would you know a source for this resistor? And how would you check it for resistance or power in and out.
I also failed to mention in my original post that the orange and black wires going to the passenger side fan have no voltage with the power switch on.  But as I previously stated if I run battery voltage from another source to the motor it runs.  Therefore my problem seems to be somewhere in the system which sends voltage to the motor and not the motor.
I already replaced the drivers side motor thanks to information from a previous discussion a few years ago.
Thanks

Bruce,
The resistor has 3 taps on it, thus the 4 wires. If it is good, you will see resistance (not an open)  between any 2 of the wires. Any 3 should show resistance to the 4th wire. Resistance is probably from ~1 to 5 ohms  for a good resistor.

Steve
Is there a source for these resistors?  I cannot remove the plug with the 4 wires and the plug with the orange wire.  I am afraid to exert more force for fear of breaking the resistor.  I did check for resistance at a few terminals and had no connection.  This was done with the wires connected and not sure if this will affect my readings.
The resistor for the driver's side fan gets warm when running the fan at low speed, so I assume it is good.
Thanks

Bruce,
I had one go bad on my 2000 Marquis. I got a replacement at BCS. It was Acme # D32H-19A706-AB. Cost $55.
It's for a Ford. You can get it here for $28.  https://www.comfortairgr.com/shop/blower-resistor-ford-d32h-19a706-ab/  (assuming it's the same part).

Thanks Steve and Fred,
With your help I was able to solve the problem and both blower motors work.
I replaced the driver side blower motor, part #655-1076 at NAPA auto parts.  I think it comes from a c10 Chevrolet pickup truck. Had to use my old blower cage.
My Blower resistor was good, but the connections were poor and the single orange wire had melted the cover and had a lot of corrosion on it.  Thanks to Steve for the part number link and called Comfort Air Parts.  They convinced me to pull out the resistor and check resistance.  It checked out so I replaced all the female lock tab connectors, purchased at NAPA.  These are different from the typical female spade connectors and will lock into the plastic 4 pin plug.  I had to replace the single plug cover as the old one was melted.  Comfort Air is the only source I was able to find for the resistor.  Steve's post gives the link to their website.  There are similar ones at the auto parts stores, but they only have 4 male spade connections, not 5.
Thanks again
Bruce
